Summary

The purpose of this study is to examine the problems and problems of combination and accordance encountered by simply Palestinian junior college students within their argumentative writing. Participants' level was categorized as excessive, intermediate, and low. With this study cohesion is assessed following Halliday and Hasan's (1976) cohesion theory while coherence can be evaluated pursuing Grice's maxims. Oshima and Hogue's (2006) criteria of achieving accordance were also employed in the analysis. The evaluation of cohesion shows that three groups are likely to use lexical devices. In fact , intermediate and low level students overused reiteration as a natural device more than high level pupils. In addition , additional lexical devices like alternative and ellipses were almost never used by the three levels of college students. Moreover, benefits reveal that language transfer is a primary factor that impedes cohesion and accordance especially simply by intermediate and low level students. The analysis of coherence shows that high level students obtain higher scores than more advanced and low level students. Therefore, the low level students violate the criteria of achieving coherence as delineated by Grice (1976) and Oshima and Hogue (2006). Through study of cohesion, natural devices do not always lead to achieve accordance. The poor quality of the low and more advanced students' composing causes insufficient persuasive, satisfaction and rational connection of ideas.
